Welcome to Glenwood

The community surrounding Glenwood Elementary today is characterized by its diversity. Just south of the Skytrain and denser housing, the Glenwood neighbourhood contains productive farmland and market gardens, light industry, and small acreages. Most of the immediate neighbourhood consists of single-family housing.

Although we are a small school, we provide a comprehensive program for all of our students (kindergarten to grade 7). Our dedicated staff provides a wealth of both academic and extra-curricular opportunities for our students. School activities include monthly assemblies, grade 7 band, primary choir, and sports day. Programs offered outside school hours include: extramural sports teams (cross country, volleyball, basketball, and track), peer mediators, intermediate choir, and friendship club.

In 2005, we celebrated the 100 th year of a school on this south slope site (Dundonald Elementary, Riverway East Elementary, Glenwood Elementary). Each student had a part in designing and painting a patch for a commemorative quilt. Along with our staff, we had an enormous amount of help from two retired staff members and a number of parents in making this quilt. Another project in which our grade five, six and seven students undertook was to host a tea in May and interview former students and staff, parents and other community members, and local dignitaries. Students created a written history of our school, with transcripts of their interviews, along with a commemorative scrapbook of the individuals who were interviewed. The culmination was on October 5, 2005 when we hosted an Open House and ceremonies to mark our 100 th year celebration.

There is a high degree of parent involvement at Glenwood Elementary with an active, well-organized Parent Advisory Committee. Parents are seen as partners in education and we value the time and support that is received from parents in this community. Parents can be involved as much or as little as they choose to be whether it is through driving to sports events, helping out in the classroom, or helping to sponsor activities within the school. At Glenwood Elementary we welcome such fantastic parent support and participation.
